My picky little eater....

You've probably heard me talk about what a picky eater Cal is. Well, it's really getting old. Daniel and I are both fed up with fighting him about food. We do really good for a few days and then just get tired of fighting and give up. Well, we're not giving up anymore. This kid is going to start eating a wider variety of food. We're not asking him to eat lima beans, escargot, or sushi.... simple things like hot dogs and cheese. Good grief.... who doesn't like hot dogs and cheese? So, see the tiny bit of food on his plate? That's all we were asking him to eat. I actually had 2 whole grain Ritz crackers on his plate too.... he ate those after an hour. We starter dinner at 6:30 and by 9:00 (yes, 2 1/2 hours), he was still at the table refusing to even touch it. Daniel finally got him to take a nibble of each the hot dog and cheese -- or else he would have been eating them for breakfast. After bath, while we were getting ready for bed, the kid had the nerve to ask for popcorn.

And, this was just a cute picture of Patti that Cal took.... yes, he got his little hands on my camera again. Only about 20 pictures this time.

Keep up with it Jen. Colleen was just as picky as Cal until she went to sleep a few times without eating dinner. She would tell us that she was hungry but all she wanted was chocolate, cheetos, cookies, ice cream and any other junk...nothing of any substance. So one evening going to sleep without any dinner, she woke up about 3 a.m...starving...and a miracle happened. She asked for a hotdog and mac & cheese...and she cleaned her plate. We haven't any problems since. I know it is exhausting but stick with it.

Love ya...Natalie

That's tough. We have a general one bite rule....at dinner you have to take one bite of everything that is fixed and then you can be done but there is nothing else until breakfast. Breakfast and lunch is always something they'll eat but dinner is whatever mom fixes and a firm one bite rule for each food. As the pediatrician always says (and good old mom too) they'll eat when they are hungry. I know it doesn't make moms and dads worry any less or feel any less frustrated. If you tell him he can get down from the table after just one bite do you think he'd do it?

Did he get the popcorn?

I just showed Cal his picture on the blog.... he was about 7 feet away. And he came running saying "let me see crying". In other words, he knew it was probably a picture of him crying since he had been doing just that for 2 hours.... but, when he saw it up close he said, "I'm so happy... I eat it." What a turkey!

Thanks for your encouragement ladies. I sure need it. We've done the no bite, no dinner thing, but the kid is soooo stubborn and hard headed. It's going to take lots more evenings like that... and maybe it will work. I'll keep you posted :)

Nope, no popcorn.

Way to hang in there, Jen. It's so tough to be the "bad guy"...but he'll (and especially his WIFE) will thank you for it later!

PS--it's not fair that your almost 4 year old takes better pictures than I do! Guess it's in the genes!

Hey, I am all for Cal. Anybody knows you always ask for popcorn before going to bed.
